Work History

Political and Economic Assistant

U.S. Consulate General
11.2018 - Current

My responsibilities include tracking regulatory, economic and political developments, briefing diplomats, and fostering strong engagement with stakeholders. Over the last five years, I've conducted research and analysis on critical minerals in Indonesia, focusing on nickel, graphite, and REE, to improve U.S. Government (USG) understanding and provide input to policymakers at various agencies such as the State Department, Labor Department, National Security Council, and USAID. I've developed relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in order to strengthen the USG engagement in nickel-rich regions.

I am working on a number of initiatives, including one with USAID to improve ESG implementation in nickel mining and smelting. I also collaborate with the U.S. Solidarity Center to improve worker health and safety standards in nickel processing zones. I also collaborate with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) to promote their audit mechanism to government agencies, private and state-owned firms, academics, civil society organizations, and labor unions in nickel-producing regions.

Accomplishments

  • At the Indonesian Consulate General, I organized business forums and clinics for more than 20 Indonesian companies operating in Southern Vietnam to help them connect with local authorities and consult on their operational difficulties, particularly with tax and customs agencies.
  • Handle around 15-20 business inquiries from Indonesia and Vietnam companies with topics including setting up a representative office, halal requirements for F&B and cosmetics, customs matters, particularly tariff and certificate of origin, and assisting in identifying reputable partners specifically distributors.
  • Identifying and negotiating with Indonesian companies based in Southern Vietnam to donate and promote their products at the annual "Consular Club" charity bazaar. Each year around 5-7 companies join with donations from those businesses amounting to $ 3,000-4,000.
  • During my work time at the U.S. Consulate General, I have established strong relationships with local authorities in nickel-rich regions of Eastern Indonesia. These connections provide valuable insights into political and economic issues at the subnational and central government levels, as well as serve as important communication lines for obtaining first-hand information and lobbying purposes.
  • I'm preparing substantial materials and logistics for the mineral and energy workshop with speakers from the Colorado School of Mines and attended by regents, heads of agencies, media, and academics from 14 regencies that have abundant nickel deposits. During the event, the participants gained new knowledge and insight, particularly with the conversion of heat waste from nickel smelter operation to electricity.
