Assess the patient's physical, mental, and emotional condition during sick calls, clinics, and infirmary rounds by observing symptoms, appearance, and trends in vital signs.
Initiate appropriate interventions according to health care policies and procedures, as well as nursing protocols.
Review treatment plans, laboratory data, and medication/treatment records.
Develop nursing diagnoses and a treatment plan.
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the overseeing physicians.
Check for medication allergies, dosages, side effects, and drug interactions.
Collect samples (i.e., blood, urine) for laboratory analysis.
Monitor for changes in condition for acute, chronic, and convalescent care patients.

Authorize patient transfer to the infirmary or to an outside hospital emergency room.
Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records of patient care.
Document all requests for medical attention, including objective data collected during patient assessment, treatment provided, evaluation of the treatment effectiveness, and patient education that was provided.
Explain basic disease prevention concepts and promote mental and physical health to patients.
Coordinate nursing care activities with other on-site services.
Evaluate and monitor medical supplies to ensure appropriate supplies are available in sufficient quantities.
Ensure accurate accounting and secure storage of supplies, including narcotics, needles, and syringe counts, is maintained.
