Mortarman

United State Marine Corps Infantry

While in the United States Marine Corps I was an 0341, Mortarman in the infantry. I also stepped in as the Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of a section within my prior unit's armory.


My mission as Mortarman was the tactical employment of the M224, 60 millimeter Light Mortar and M252, 81 millimeter Medium Mortar. Mortarman provide indirect fire in support of the rifle and LAR squads/platoons/companies and the infantry and LAR battalions.


My personal responsibilities included:

  • Ability to operate in challenging environments.
  • Execute complex missions, and adapt to high-pressure situations.
  • Combat proficiency with all mortar systems as well as the M4 and M16 rifles.
  • Tactical expertise in understanding of infantry tactics, offensive and defensive operations, and experience in planning and executing missions.
  • Leadership and teamwork to motivate teams in challenging environments, as well as experience in coordinating operations with other units.
  • Maintain and improve physical fitness, the ability to withstand strenuous activities, including long marches across tumultuous terrain and varying weather conditions carrying 80 plus pounds, physical training, martial arts, swimming, and combat operations.
  • Be adaptive and resilient to thrive in challenging and unpredictable environments, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Communication and collaboration to communicate effectively or teach fellow Marines, superiors, and other units.
