I owned my Auto repair facility, Paul’s automotive inc. in downtown Sacramento. I studied what I needed to prepare for the challenges ahead, when we opened, we did approx $215k to 1.million when I retired. I aling with some of employees took every class that we could, some toool some management along with customer skill training at the ac delco facility in San Leandro. I employed 1 tech for 49 yrs, 1 for about 26, 1 for 24, and several others as needed for demand needed. Customers loved the fact that we new most of our customers, their vehicle history, and many times their family who became customers later, we diagnoised all American vehicles, foreign, and some Volvos, Mercedes, etc. we had the best equipment you could by like Sun and its replacement Snap On. Had inventory and parts suppliers who gave us preferred pricing because of our volume. Set up state mandated osha programs and adherence, dealing with state , fire, hazard and all insurance and liability insurance, always had compentant ins reps and Acciunting firm, lawyer, and used all sources to achieve needed controls, I encourage employee with the same business outlook that I promoted. Not that the customers was always right but that we would take care of them no matter what it was, often at our cost, did not matter, I just wanted ton go home at night feeling that I was pleased and never wanted to feel otherwise. In 40 years I was only sued once as I turned all paperwork to bureau of auto repair, who controls all licenses to operate as well as monitor what your doing, Had many inspectotrs in over the years but never had a issue, so they referred many people that had problems at other shop, knowing that I would not stop doing what I needed to repair,. I overseen employees training where I found it was better to train. The way I wanted to work versus how they may have learned. Worked well as every time I hired an experienced tech they usuall had bad habits that took to long to train and to many issues to handle,. I told all with manager their job was no make me unneeded which they accomplished about 6 years before I retired when I reduced my hours from 55 to 45. They manager was able handle along with another key man almost everything that needed to be done, along with hiring and firing. Paid excellent wages and benefits, their pay 11 years ago is approx same as a dealer tech in now. Pay the best you can that’s was who I thought could help my business, which it did beyond my expectations. So now I’m retired, done all wife has wanted in our 50 years of marriage and raised to adult children to be hard workers, honest and dependable, just like my farther raised me, with a spiritual health to please God . Happy with my life and just need a little more to challenge me. As it did so many years. Father was a electrical who I worked with for my young learning who taught me about most major skills, along with having utmost respect for anyone. A good life lesson I taught to my kids and employees. I never needed to replace many techs as they all wanted to stay with me. Sold my business to 1 of my employee who now has my shop and another much bigger, my shop has covered the costs of another shop he purchased after mine. Against my advise that he would ever to make it profitable. And so he closed that one and opened another. Not being happy with 250k income he wants more, not content, hope it doesn’t cost him everything. To young to know better than my 50 years of experience.
